User's were so excited about the great Multiplayer capabilities native to Halo: Combat Evolved that they wanted more, they wanted more Maps and new exciting terrains to explore and fight in. Gearbox Software in their infinite wisdom provided an answer to all their prayers: They developed and released completely free of charge, Halo Custom Edition, (called Halo CE) the unofficial "Multiplayer Only" version of Halo: Combat Evolved having the ability to play "User Created Maps" on-line. All that was required was to own a legitimate copy of Halo: Combat Evolved with it's own unique serial key.

Special Features
  • Huge Weapon Variety: Vanquish your enemies with a vast array of Human or Covenant weaponry ranging from the stealthy (semi-automatic Pistols and Needler guns) to the fierce (Rocket Launchers and Flame Throwers).

  • Vehicle and Foot-Based Action: Tackle Maps anyway you choose - be it storming an enemy base or taking the wheel or gunnery position of a variety of powerful vehicles. Vehicles range from stolen Covenant Flyers to Human Buggies and more.

  • Indoor and Outdoor Combat: Fight seamlessly in Halo's ultra-realistic indoor and outdoor environments as you hunt in a variety of Multiplayer battles.

  • Incredible Variety: Fight Players in a variety of Maps. Among your many objectives / attack enemy outposts, raid underground labs for advanced technology, rescue fallen comrades, steal alien vehicles and weaponry and snipe enemy forces.

  • Reality Bending Special Effects: Halo featured the most advanced graphic system on the most advanced gaming platform in the world when released. Gunfire rips off the screen, explosions light up a living room, and environments blur the line between your couch and fantasy.

And so was born Halo CE, which has become legend in the on-line gaming community worldwide and still is one of the oldest FPS of it's genre still currently popular. So if you own a legitimate copy of Halo: Combat Evolved then it is easy to download the Halo Custom Edition version here:

Important:
Please follow all the instructions carefully, (including all the updates). You should update to the latest version (currently v1.09) which removes the need to have the Master Halo CD in the CD Drive to play and allows you to join the ®ealworld Guild Servers and is available here:

http://www.RealworldCE.com/apps/HaloCE/patch_ce109.exe

Once correctly installed with the settings tailored to your liking, all you need to do is run the program and connect to an on-line server and you will soon come to realise how many wonderful and magnificent User Created Maps are available to download, (without cost). Just install a new User Created Map to the Halo CE "Maps" folder and another terrain to explore and fight with other players will unfold.

See you on-line soon and have fun!

ADDENDUM
If you only install Halo Custom Edition, (and not the Full Retail Halo Combat Evolved) then the chances are to be able to use In-Game Text Chat, you will also need another file installed: Microsoft XML parser (msxmlenu.msi)
(For more info see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838993)

Fortunately you can also get it here:
